Pre-Quarter Assignment

Trying to decide who my favorite animator is challenging because there are so many talented animators out there! Because of this, I want to introduce you all to an artist that I currently am amazed with and following; Micah Buzan. Buzan’s style is very experimental and psychedelic. What fascinated me about his work was the bright colors he uses and how fluid he makes his animations. I believe that he is an underrated artist for sure because all of his animations are done traditionally on paper and is self taught! That’s talent!! You can tell that Buzan spends so much time on his projects. He makes animated music videos and sometimes will even make his own beats to go along with his work.

Buzan’s animations usually consists of various loops. I notice that he even uses the cut out method. If you enjoy trippy weird visuals, you should definitely check out Micah Buzan. You will not be disappointed.

Pre-Quarter Assignment

I used to play around in DeviantArt. There, I found one of my favourite illustration artist, NukeRooster. He is an artist who focused on painting creatures digitally. I am also a creature artist so I am fascinated on how he paints, the gestures and the textures on his creatures. He successfully caught every details that a creature should have, granting it a realistic kind of feeling. I am often inspired by his style of art and how he drew his creatures, not only the painting style but also helps me to learn on shapes of creatures. His creativity blew my mind when I saw his commission works at first sight. He would take commissions on designing creatures for the clients, at the end the creatures designed by him will be owned by the client. This commissions work like a pet shop. His creations are mind-blowing. He encouraged me to push even further to improve myself and someday, I hope to become someone as great as he is.
(He is inactive in dA now, I found that he is more active in Tumblr.)

Pre-quarter assignment

Since it is hard for me to pick an all-time favourite artist, I would like to introduce you guys one of my current favourite followed on Instagram called “Little Thunder”. The user name on IG is ”littlethunder”.

She is a popular local illustrator and she often does 2D animation or comic. Sometime you can see her work in commercial advertisement  and crossover functions. For example, she cooperated with an coffee bar and roll out a beautiful design of bottle coffee last year.

She mainly work with water color and ink with her amazing skills. I feel like that her style is kind of like a mixture of Japanese manga style and some traditional Chinese element which is very unique, elegant and gorgeous. Her life drawings always perfectly capture the beauty of female. Sexy but not filthy.

I admire her a lot and consider her as one of the best artist in Hong Kong. She has just published her own comic and art books in Japan and Taiwan. Since she is born and raised in Hong Kong, which is also known as a cultural desert, it must be a hardship to develop such a big achievement. I hope I can polish my skills and succeed just like her in the future.

Pre-Quarter Assignment

Goro Fujita

For this Pre-Quarter I am going against the grain by selecting one of my favorite artists currently instead of “all-time”. Goro Fujita has recently in the past year become someone who inspires me every day to create art. His art in the creative VR platform Quill manages to escape the limitations of the screen and impact viewers on a global scale. His scenes usually have a since of wonder and beauty crafted into them with each brushstroke. He is a self-claimed illustrator and art director, but he is most known for his revolutionary work in Quill and being one of the program’s first pioneer artist’s.  Since the creative platform is in it’s infancy, Goro has acted as a mentor for all who are trying to learn the program as he gives many free tutorials online along with livestreaming his work in process videos. He is one of my favorite artists because through determination and will, by practicing every day, he has become a great artist and chose to share what he learned with others.

Pre-Quarter Assignment

My most recent favourite animator is Glen Keane, who was introduced by professor last quarter. Keane is one of Disney’s foremost lead character animators, having been a Supervising Animator for many classics such as; The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Tarzan.

The fluidity and swiftness of his mark-making seen in his animated shorts, such as Naphtali and Duet is definitely one of the reasons to why I adore his work. It’s sketchiness upon dynamic gestures gives his characters depth and life.

As well as Keane’s visible work, I absolutely love hearing his values and rooting stories that lead him to everything that he’s done; e.g. how his father was a massive inspiration for him throughout his life, or the first moment he saw his new-born daughter. It is very goose-bump-rising to hear how he put all of these very human experiences onto paper, into the characters, and to his audience to give everyone something very relatable and intimate.
