Project 1 – WIP Post 2 – Production

The film was shot in Victoria’s room. The animation (the movement of the characters and the props) was done by Victoria and the camerawork and the compositing were done by me. When animating, we had to shoot more frames at smaller intervals because our first shot did not have enough frames for the movement of the characters to translate as smoothly when played out.

We ran into difficulties in setting up the camera angle especially for the over-the-shoulder in the mirror shot as we had to hold the camera up by hand. During compositing, we used holds for certain frames to create breathing space between each major movement.

The music will be provided by Alex Wang, a sound design major SCAD student. The music, “우리동네 빨간 길” (Our neighborhood’s red street) can be found on Wang’s Instagram (alex_w_music). The clip will be complete after the music is inserted on top of the animation.

WIP :Stop Motion

Cameron and I had a hard time coming up with an idea/concept. Which was the basic first step to creating our stop motion. I had gathered a lot of reference videos from YouTube to get inspiration. Cameron and I got some ideas from them but ultimately decided to use the stuffed animals that I already had, to save time and money. We did a quick brainstorming session before we just went ahead and shot the frames, going along with different things as we continued.

We ran into some trouble, in regards to the different angles to shoot the extremely short film. While also having difficulties with our figures, for one was not as easy to move.

Project 1 – Work in progress

For our first project, we are going to make stop-motion animation. Marissa, Hazel and Lily form a group and discuss about the theme. In the very beginning, we planned to make a video about food and cat fur. However, when we were eating lunch, we changed our mind and decided to make a video about Lily’s original character, Red-Hearted Sweet Potato.

The photos show our production progress and how we make this video. We used clay to create the sweet potato and paper to draw the decoration, also, we bought the dishcloth in wet market. The figure, Link is friendly sponsored by Hazel!!

Making stop-motion animation is more time-consuming than we thought. We used a lot of time to make the sweet potato and the decorations. We used foam to support the paper for standing. It is difficult to change the motion of sweet potato as the decorations behind keep falling down, very hard to maintain the consistency throughout the video. Thats why we have a strong sense of achievement after we finish the whole animation.

Project 1-WIP 1-Pre-production and Production

For our first project, Julia Reymundo and I will be doing a stop-motion animation about making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. To keep it simple there are no elaborate sets or people in the shots. ( I have a hand cameo but that’s it) We drew most of our inspiration from the Haunted Hotel By James Stuart Blackton and the idea that the objects were able to move independently with what looked like no human intervention.

There was not a lot of pre-production work since we settled on the concept very quickly due to its simplicity. Most of our time went into spit balling ideas on what camera we could use and how we were going to get nice angles without a tripod. We decided we would be using an ipad and a free stop-motion software that I found in the app store. For post production we plan on putting the exported film into Premiere and enhancing the movement of the objects with sounds and background music.

During production we had to get rather creative when it came to shooting since we were in a cramped kitchen trying to get dynamic shots of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We ended up using a bowl, a drying rack, and even a rice cooker as our makeshift tripods. It was a fun experience.

Project 1 – WIP Post 1 – Pre-production

For Project 1: Object Animation, Victoria and I will be making a short stop-motion animation. The animation will only include one character to keep the animation simplistic, minimal, and short.

Plot: The main character, a barbie doll, wakes up from her sleep and takes off her eye mask. She then applies make-up on her face while looking in the mirror While she does this, a ‘poof’ of smoke will appear. And when the smoke from the ‘poof’ fades, in place of the doll will be a real girl standing with the same make-up tools in her hand.

The shots will be taken with an iPhone. The shots will be composited using after effects as we are considering using computer effects for the ‘poof’.

Like how Koko the Clown interacts with the live-action actors in Out of the Inkwell (1921) by Max and Dave Fleischer by leaving the paper and hiding behind props, the doll in this clip will interact with the real world by transforming into a real person.

Blog posts and Rules

Hi Welcome to ANIM 223 – History of Animation

Here is the place for you to share your thoughts regarding to our class contents and topics. There are two main parts of the blog posts, the 1)major posts and 2) project WIP posts

1. MAJOR POSTS

It’s required for each student to post at least 16 blog posts related to or inspired by class content/topic/discussion reflecting his/ her understanding the class contents, introduced artist and art works.

Each post has to be at least 150 words. Images and videos are allowed to post with the text. Your full name has to be included at the end of your post.

A title is required for each post.

When you finish your major post, PLEASE remember to check the box of “Major Post” in the categories on the right.

2. PROJECT WIP POSTS

It’s required for each team to post to show work-in-progress to record the process for assignments. The content can include but not limit to: initial brainstorming, meeting and discussion notes,  inspirations, sketches, make-of video/ images, team working photos, storyboards, etc. There is no limitation of how many extra posts you need to post for each project.

The naming of Project WIP posts has to follow “Project# – WIP# – title of the post”

Please include all the team members’ names at the end of each WIP post.

When you finish your project WIP post, PLEASE remember to check the box of “Project WIP” in the categories on the right.

3. COMMENTS AND INVOLVEMENT

All students are encouraged to participate in the discussion about the posts other classmates created. Please give related thoughts and comments posts and keep the dynamics of the blog. All extra comments will be counted as part of “participation and extra posts” for grading.

4. OTHER POSTS

Students are recommended to share animation pieces, animation events or articles with some simple comments. For this kind of posts, students don’t have to follow the 150 words requirement but have to click the “uncategorized” as categories.

All of this kind of post will be counted as part of “participation and extra posts” for grading.

5. TAG

It’s recommended to add some related tag to each of your post. It will make easier  to search contents related to some specific topics or categories.

6. ABOUT HOW TO POST

It’s highly recommended to write your regular posts in word and paste into the wordpress after in case of the browser crash sometimes.
